Design that connects us
Control Room Design
Mima (previously CCD Design and Ergonomics) first started delivering ergonomically designed control centres for the emergency services in the 70s. Over the decades, we have designed control rooms around the world, across rail, airports, renewable energy, nuclear, traffic control, drone technologies, security and for experimental facilities such as CERN and ITER.
Our control centre design service combines the science of ergonomics and human factors with interior and technology design to help our clients optimise operational performance and optimise the human performance of their operators.
Our approach is increasingly helping organisations not just deliver operational improvements but directly impact passenger and customer experience.
What we can do for you:
Insight
- Operational concepts and user requirements analysis
- Mock-up and simulation trials
- Workplace ergonomics and assessments
Strategy
- Building selection and feasibility studies
Design / Consultancy
- Ergonomic control room design and operational layouts
- Workplace ergonomics assessments
- Control room environment advice

- Control room technology selection
- Digital user interaction design and usability testing
- In Service Review (ISR)
Training & Engagement
- Mock-up trials and user prototyping
The benefits we bring to you and why we're different:
- A user-centred approach aligned with deep knowledge of sector-specific compliance, for ergonomically sound design. We ensure a clear record of the human factors behind each decision, with full traceability and assurance in how design risks are managed.
- We design with input from real users, to deliver control rooms that are intuitive, safe and have user buy-in.
- With nearly 50 years of experience across different industries, we know what works, and bring that insight into each stage of the design process.
What challenges can we help you overcome?
- Help with critical aspects, such as room layout, the design of workstations, application of technology and key environment considerations.
- Tackle under-performance at the core of your operation by improving inadequate design in the existing control centre.
- Improve the effectiveness of collaboration between staff or improving how efficiently you perform critical tasks.
- Reduce staff turnover by elevating staff experience as part of the design of the control centre.
Across the spatial coordination and technical design stages and through implementation we can act as design guardian and facilitate further user engagement to address any potential deviation from the design intent.
As the implementation stage draws to a close, we support handover, training and upskilling of staff and help with preparations for onboarding others in the future.

Highlight Case Study – Control Centre Design

Network Rail
Network Rail South East Route needed to relocate the Kent Integrated Control Centre (KICC), including 38 desk positions, within central London. The KICC is responsible for running the day-to-day operations and co-ordinating incident management in the Kent area of the railway.
